The world's largest motor manufacturer rebuilt how environmental data enters R&D. Design teams now see carbon alongside cost and performance, in minutes rather than months.
The decision happens at the design table
Around 80% of a product's carbon footprint is locked in before manufacturing begins. Material choices, supplier specs, geometry, and tooling decisions made during R&D set the emissions floor for everything that follows. By the time a motor reaches the factory, the engineers have already set most of its carbon footprint for the rest of its lifetime.
That decision used to happen without environmental data because the math took too long to be useful inside a design sprint. ABB just changed that for its own R&D labs.
What ABB can now do
Working with Unravel Carbon's PCF Agent, ABB deployed a proof of concept that calculates a comprehensive manufacturing product carbon footprint for low voltage motors in real time. The agent ingests the bill of materials, energy inputs, supplier data, and process specifications, then produces a full PCF that R&D engineers can interrogate while design choices are still open.
ABB's design teams now treat environmental impact as a third design axis alongside cost and performance. Evaluating two motor configurations means seeing what each one costs, how each one performs, and what each one emits, in the same review.
What changed in practice
Before this work, product carbon footprint software was something you ran after the fact. Calculations for a motor like this took weeks of consultant time, with a static report landing long after the design decision had been made.
The PCF Agent compresses that work into a single session. It generates a report for a product with thousands of components in approximately fifteen minutes, with full traceability back to the underlying data. Every assumption and emission factor is logged. The output is audit-ready, which is what eventually matters for procurement disclosures and limited assurance.
For ABB, that compression turned PCF from a reporting artifact into a design input.
Why it matters for the market
Three things make this matter right now.
Procurement velocity
Industrial buyers across Europe and Japan are demanding verified product carbon footprints in their tender process. CSRD, the EU Taxonomy, and CBAM push large buyers toward suppliers who can produce defensible emissions data per unit shipped. A manufacturer who can hand a buyer a traceable PCF in days speeds up the tender cycle and reduces the risk of disqualification.
Design tradeoffs
When carbon enters the design review, engineers find efficiency gains they would have otherwise missed. Some material choices are cost-neutral. A few are cost-positive. The only way to surface them is to put the data in front of the people making the decision while the decision is still open.
Regulatory positioning
Industrial manufacturers are heading toward digital product passports with embedded environmental data. ABB is building the capability now, on its own products, with the data architecture that makes compliance a downstream side effect rather than a fire drill.
Where product carbon footprint tools are heading next
Product carbon footprint software is moving out of the disclosure function and into the operating layer of industrial companies. The leaders in this shift are quietly rebuilding their R&D and procurement workflows so carbon shows up in the same review where cost and performance already do.
ABB's program runs alongside other Unravel Carbon deployments where enterprise sustainability teams report 50 to 90% time savings and projected $28,000 savings per PCF on equivalent work and 19 to 36% measured emissions reductions once carbon data reaches design and operational decisions early enough to act on. Companies with AI-native carbon infrastructure already in place are ahead of where the market is heading. They built the capability to make sustainable products with the audit trail attached while competitors were still treating PCF as a reporting task.
